(1) How to use silane coupling agent

There are two ways to apply silane coupling agent:

One is to formulate silane into an aqueous solution, use it to treat the inorganic powder, and then mix it with the organic polymer or resin base material, that is, the pretreatment method. This method has a good surface modification treatment effect and is a commonly used surface modification method.

Another method is to mix silane with inorganic powders (such as fillers or pigments) and organic polymer base materials, that is, the migration method.

Most silane coupling agents must be prepared as an aqueous solution before use, even if it is hydrolyzed in advance. The hydrolysis time varies depending on the type of silane coupling agent and the pH value of the solution, ranging from a few minutes to tens of minutes. The pH value of the aqueous solution is generally controlled between 3-5 during configuration, and the pH value higher than 5 or lower than 3 will promote the formation of polymer. Therefore, the prepared and hydrolyzed silane coupling agent cannot be left for too long, otherwise it will self-condensate and become invalid.

(2) Calculation of the amount of silane coupling agent

The amount of silane coupling agent is related to the type of coupling agent and the specific area of the filler. Assuming monolayer adsorption, it can be calculated as follows:

The amount of silane coupling agent = (filler mass × filler specific surface area) / silane coupling agent to a small coating area

The silane coupling agent to the small coating area varies with the type of silane coupling agent. Generally speaking, the actual dosage is smaller than the dosage calculated with the above formula. When the specific surface area data of the inorganic powder or the small coating area of the silane coupling agent is not known, the amount of the silane coupling agent can be selected as 0.10%-1.5% of the mass of the inorganic powder.
